Visiting Liskeard in Cornwall
Liskeard is an ancient stannary and market town conveniently located in the heart of South East Cornwall, the town lies just above the Looe River valley which means from Looe by train you have easy access to it, the main London to Penzance railway line and the A38 provide Liskeard with rapid access to Plymouth and the rest of Cornwall.
While you are in the area Liskeard is really worth a visit, due to its very old market traditions which go back as early as 1240 Liskeard is one of the few places in Cornwall to still hold a cattle market weekly, held every Tuesday, this once very popular event has fallen under tough times but thanks to places like Likeard the traditions of the people before us live on.
The is also a wealth of great shops in Liskeard, you won’t find many major brands in Liskeard but you will find some excellent local shops selling locally produced products including; Cornish wine, Cornish cheese, Cornish pastry, jewellery or glass. These shops are great to explore and always have wonderful bargains on offer.
Some of these shops still have their Victorian shop fronts so it is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in seeing some historical yet still in use artefacts. You can enjoy the historical surrounding at your leisure in the narrow traffic free streets throughout the town centre.
Stuart house which was restored in the 16th century was once used by Charles 1 as a lodging in 1644 and now houses a arts and heritage centre where there are regular events throughout the year which are always worth a visit.
